Coordinates: 33 ° 58 ' S , 145 ° 42' O Carrathool Shire is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 18,932.5 km² and has about 2,700 inhabitants.
Carrathool is the largest shire of the Murrumbidgee region in the southern half of the state and is located approximately 610 km west of the metropolis of Sydney and 425 km northwest of the Australian capital Canberra . The area includes 53 hamlets and hamlets, including Carrathool, Goolgowi, Hillston, Merriwagga and Rankins Springs. The seat of the Shire Council is in the village of Goolgowi in the southeast of the LGA, where almost 300 people live.

The Carrathool Council has ten members who are elected by the residents of the five wards (two councilors each from A, B, C, D and E ward). These five districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
