Cisco CRS-1 Backbone Core Router

The Carrier Routing System (CRS) is a router developed by Cisco that is used as a central router on the Internet backbone . The operating system used is IOS-XR , the latest version of Cisco's Internetwork Operating System , based on the QNX microkernel . A housing can contain up to 16 boards and use an OC-768 SONET interface. The system also has the option of combining several housings. In this multi-chassis configuration , the housings (line card chassis (LCC) ) are connected to so-called fabric-card chassis .

A large CRS contains over 1000 boards with 40 Gbit / s each, so the total bandwidth can be up to 92 Tbit / s. In both the simple and the multi-chassis configuration, the CRS is based on a three-level Beneš architecture

During its development, the device was also known by the code name HFR , short for Huge Fucking Router. Marketing later said the abbreviation meant Huge Fast Router .

Competitors in the area of high-performance routers are Brocade Communications Systems (formerly Foundry Networks ) with the NetIron XMR series, Extreme Networks with the Black Diamond 20808 system, Huawei with the NE5000E and NE80E systems, Juniper Networks with the series T640 and T1600 or earlier also Avici Systems , which are no longer active in this market today.
