Juniper Networks, Inc. is the world's second largest network equipment supplier.

Company data

Juniper Networks was founded in 1996 by Pradeep Sindhu, Dennis Ferguson and Bjorn Liencres. The company launched its first product, the M40 router , in 1998. In June 1999 the company went public on the NASDAQ. In the second quarter of 2004 was carried out acquisition of the company NetScreen Technologies (3.4 billion USD ). In the second quarter of 2005, Kagoor Networks ($ 65.7 million), Redline Networks ($ 132 million) and Peribit Networks ($ 337 million) were acquired. Acorn Packet Solutions (USD 8.7 million) and Funk Software (USD 122 million) were also acquired in the fourth quarter of the same year. In August 2006, the company was the target of an investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for alleged stock option updates .

Business areas

Juniper produces high-end routers that are used in the core and edge areas of the Internet backbone . Since it was founded in 1996, Cisco Systems has lost a not insignificant market share to Juniper Networks. Juniper's stake rose from 0% to 33.5% between 1996 and 2000, while Cisco's stake fell from 89% to 64.7% during that time. During this time Juniper earned the nickname "Cisco Killer".

An operating system developed from FreeBSD called "Junos OS" works on the routers . Junos OS is based on current versions of FreeBSD. The BSD license allows - subject to a few rules - to make changes to the source code without having to publish it. The ASICs built into the devices , which primarily handle the router's I / O-heavy operations, are specially designed and manufactured by IBM . The routers are produced by Solectron and Celestica , which means an enormous relief for Juniper in the management of inventories and production costs . An outsourcing contract was signed with the contract manufacturer Flextronics in July 2006, which includes manufacturing and logistics services as well as participation in the market launch of new products.

In 2004, Juniper took over NetScreen , which had previously expanded its product portfolio by purchasing Neoteris. With the ScreenOS operating system, NetScreen specializes in developments in the area of network security ( routers , firewalls and IP / VPN security systems). Juniper is the world's second largest Internet network supplier after acquiring NetScreen.

In 2005, the product range was expanded through the takeover of the companies Kagoor Networks ( Session Border Controller (SBC), products for IP telephony (VoIP)), Redline Networks (developer and manufacturer of front ends for corporate web applications), Peribit Networks (specialist in the optimization of Wide Area networks ) and wireless software ( WLAN - authentication ) again significantly enlarged.

On November 16, 2010, Juniper Networks announced that it would take over WLAN specialist Trapeze Networks for 152 million US dollars. The process was completed in late 2010. With the takeover, Juniper Networks expanded its product range to include controller-controlled WLANs. At the beginning of 2016, the sale of WLAN products was discontinued.

An option installed by the manufacturer has made it possible since 2008 to make the VPN network traffic completely readable.
