history

Historical references to Carvoeiro go back to the year 1544. Carvoeiro Bay was a particularly attractive destination for pirates. At that time the place was called Caboiere .

After the advent of mass tourism in the Algarve in the 1960s, the former fishing village has become an international tourist destination that primarily attracts families. In addition to the classic "sun and beach" tourism, Carvoeiro has also made a name for itself in golf and water sports. Before that, Carvoeiro was frequented by the Portuguese as a vacation spot between the First and Second World Wars . The ruins of the casino in the "Rua do Casino" still bear witness to this time.

On October 4, 1985 Carvoeiro became an independent municipality ( Freguesia ) in the Lagoa district.

With the law of April 19, 2001 Carvoeiro was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

tourism

Carvoeiro is particularly popular with beach holidaymakers. Five sandy beaches can be found in and around Carvoeiro, which are embedded in an imposing rocky backdrop. One kilometer east of the center and main beach is the Algar Seco viewpoint . Here passages and caves are washed into the rock and some are artificially created. The surrounding cliffs offer a colorful game from light yellow to ocher to red. From the "Algar Seco" in an easterly direction you will find the largest sea grottos in the Algarve. Local fishermen offer sightseeing trips from the larger beaches.

Many “overwinterers” come to Carvoeiro in the off-season, as the rocky beaches are very sheltered from the wind and you can also lie on the beach in winter. Due to strict building regulations, houses with more than two storeys can only be built in the immediate center of Carvoeiro; outside this zone, only one basement and one upper storey can be built. As a result, Carvoeiro has largely retained its charm and has become a popular destination for holiday home buyers.

Golfers can play on three golf courses: the 2 × 18 hole courses “Gramacho” and “Pinta”, both of which are operated by the well-known Pestana Group , and the 1 × 9 hole golf course “Vale de Milho”. There are also several tennis courts and a gym. There are two riding stables in the vicinity.

A cliff path stretches in an easterly direction to the small church Senhora da Rocha and in a westerly direction 5 km to the next place "Ferragudo"

Most of the area around Carvoeiro is used for agriculture. Here you will find vineyards, orange plantations, fields with fig and almond trees. In the city of Lagoa, 5 km away, the wine capital of the Algarve, the harvested wine is processed in the Adega de Lagoa cooperative and offered for sale.

From the mid-1960s until his death in 2001, Carvoeiro had also been the residence of the long-time German honorary consul Enzio von Baselli.

beaches

The main beaches of Carvoeiro are, from west to east, Praia Vale de Lapa, Praia Paraiso, Praia do Carvoeiro, Praia Covo and Praia Centianes, Praia Carvalho, Praia Benagil and Praia da Marinha. 7 km to the east is the beach of Praia da Albandeira and 4 km to the west is the beach of Praia Caneiros.

All beaches are bathing bays with sandy beaches. The northern area of the beaches is protected by 20-30 m high limestone cliffs. As a result, the cooler north wind cannot get into the bays in the off-season, so you can see holidaymakers on the beach even in winter. A cliff path above the rocks connects all the beaches.

In the main season you can find restaurants, sun loungers and sometimes jet skis and pedal boats to rent on the beaches of Praia Caneiros, Praia do Carvoeiro, Praia Centianes, Praia Benagil and Praia da Marinha as well as Praia da Albandeira.
