The Caserma Cernaia is a barracks of the Carabinieri in Turin . It is located on Via Cernaia in the city center, around 300 meters east of the Porta Susa train station . It is named after a battle that took place in the Crimean War on August 16, 1855 with Italian participation on the Chorna River (or "Chernaya", Cernaia in Italian ). Carabinieri recruits have been trained in the barracks for over 150 years .

history

Until the unification of Italy in 1861, the Carabinieri trained their recruits in the citadel of Turin . From the mid-1850s, the citadel was demolished for urban planning reasons, except for the entrance area (mastio) to make space for new streets, city palaces and other buildings. These included Via Cernaia and the monumental Caserma Cernaia, which opened on January 19, 1864 and was designed by the genius officers Barabino and Castellazzi together with the architect Camillo Ricci .

In the course of the unification of Italy, the Carabinieri force had to be expanded significantly. In addition to 13 new territorial Carabinieri legions , there was a 14th training legion, which was housed in the new Caserma Cernaia . In 1885, the training was legion to Rome moved ( Caserma Vittorio Emanuele II ) , a battalion , however, the legion remained still in Turin. From this battalion a second training legion emerged in 1923, which was again downgraded to a battalion in 1929. In 1951, the battalion was turned into a training legion, which was renamed the recruiting school in 1970. The Legion (and later the school) had three battalions at times: in addition to the one in Turin, two others in Fossano and Alba . There was also a branch in Bologna .

Until 2005, numerous recruits were trained in the Caserma Cernaia , who were allowed to do their basic military service with the Carabinieri. After the suspension of compulsory military service and the takeover of regular soldiers from the other branches of the armed forces , the training company underwent some changes. In 2008 the school in the Caserma Cernaia was subordinated to the new training legion in Rome. The latter is an association at brigade level, to which all remaining recruit schools of the Carabinieri were subordinated. In 2014, the Turin barracks were occupied by no more than 300 prospective Carabinieri.

Over the years, the interior of the barracks has been rebuilt and modernized several times. Among other things, it has ten general classrooms, two multimedia rooms, a training control center , an apartment for simulating house searches, a shooting range and a gym as well as a small museum.

The Caserma Cernaia was badly damaged by Allied bombers on November 8, 1942 and July 13, 1943.

Others

Immediately south of the Cernaia barracks is another barracks named after Pietro Micca , in which the Carabinieri command for the metropolitan city of Turin is located. To the east there is a small park in which, with the Mastio , a remnant of the Turin citadel can be seen. There is also an artillery museum there .
