The Cassette Aided Surgical System ( CAOS , cassette-based operating system) is in the 1980s in the German Democratic Republic developed computer - operating system , which among other things, the operation of the small computer KC 85/2 to 85/4 KC possible. It is controlled via a command line , data processing is possible with an 8-bit bandwidth. CAOS occupies around 4 kilobytes of ROM memory, and other data is stored on audio cassettes.

As software developed independently in the GDR, CAOS is incompatible with the computers / operating systems common in western countries. The work on CAOS was stopped after the reunification of Germany , because the hardware necessary for operation was no longer manufactured.

Unpublished versions

A flyer dated June 11, 1990 listed the following versions that apparently did not appear:

  • OS / pi 90 (KC 82 / 2-3)

Homebrew developments

Since the fall of the Wall, private users have been developing new versions, some of which require some modifications to the hardware (so-called KC 85/5 ):

  • CAOS 4.4 (KC 85/4)
