The coat of arms of the former municipality

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Castedo and Cotas were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Castedo e Cotas . Castedo is the seat of this newly formed community.

Culture and sights

Three sacred buildings are listed in the community, including the 16th century parish church Igreja Paroquial de Castedo (also Igreja de São João Baptista ) , which has been rebuilt several times . The single nave church has two side chapels , some of them late Baroque , and shows elements of Mannerism and Rococo , especially in the ceiling paintings.

Castedo is located in the oldest protected wine-growing region in the world, the Alto Douro , which was registered in 1756 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

administration

Castedo is the seat of a municipality of the same name. It consists only of the town of Castedo. In the course of the upcoming municipal reform in Portugal and the associated dissolution of numerous municipalities in the country, the continued existence of an independent municipality Castedo is at risk in view of its small and continuing dwindling population.
