The Castello Piccolomini is the ruin of a low castle on the edge of the Fucino plain in the Italian municipality of Ortucchio in the province of L'Aquila . It is a national monument .

The Castello Piccolomini initially stood on the island of Ortucchio near Lake Fucin . In fact, the complex was surrounded by a moat that was connected to the lake. With the progressive drying up of the lake, this protection diminished.

The Renaissance-style complex was built by Antonio Todeschini Piccolomini in 1488, after the previous fortress was destroyed by Napoleon Orsini's troops .

The building was damaged in the Avezzano earthquake in 1915 and restored in the 1970s.

description

The castle has a rectangular floor plan with round towers at the corners of the wall; only the foundation of the northwest tower has been preserved. The entrance to the castle is on the side facing the village and above the portal there is a stone tablet that names the year of the renovation by the Piccolominis .

Within the walls there is a keep , the oldest part of the castle. Its entire crown is set with battlements .
