The Castello di Ortona dei Marsi is the ruin of a hilltop castle above the Giovenco Valley in the Italian municipality of Ortona dei Marsi in the province of L'Aquila .
history
Ortona dei Marsi is strategically located above a valley that connects the Fucino plateau to the east with the Sagittario valley and has ancient roots that go back to the Italian city of Milonia .
The first historical sources about the present village date from the 12th century and refer to the fact that the fief belonged to the Counts of Celano . The fiefdom fell successively to the Cantelmos in the 15th century and to Francescantonio Paolini in 1666 , before the Massimi family owned it in the 18th century .
The castle, which was already in disrepair at the beginning of the 20th century, suffered no further serious damage in the Avezzano earthquake in 1915 . The buildings of the original castle are in ruin, only the tower is well preserved.

The castle ruins above the village and the Giovenco valley consist of the ruins of the curtain wall and a tower in the center of the fortress.
The cylindrical tower with a sloping foundation was added to the castle in the 16th century to allow the landlords to control the settlement in the event of a possible popular uprising.
The tower was accessed through a raised entrance on the north side; on the opposite side there is an opening with a slit.
