The Castillo de Belmonte is a castle in the southwest of the Spanish province of Cuenca in the autonomous region of Castile-La Mancha (or New Castile) and is located on the hill of San Cristobal on the eastern edge of the small town of Belmonte, which still has around 2,000 inhabitants .
history
The Castle of Belmonte was on the orders of the then Marquis ( marqués ) of Villena , Don Juan Pacheco built in the years around the 1456th The architect was Juan Guas , but Hannequin from Brussels is also associated with the construction.
In the 19th century, the castle was enlarged on the orders of Eugénie de Montijo . At the end of the 19th century it became the property of the Dominican Order . The monks built a chapel in the medieval horse stables.
In the 20th century the Falangist youth used the building. This installed showers, baths and electrical installations.
Currently the castle is owned by the Dukes of Peñaranda, descendants of the Dukes of Alba and Eugénie de Montijo .
