The Castillo de Grajal de Campos is a castle in Grajal de Campos , a municipality in the province of León in the autonomous region of Castile and León ( Spain ), which was built in the 16th century. The complex on the edge of the village has been a protected architectural monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) since 1931 .

History and description

In the 15th century, Grajal de Campos became the property of the Vega family. Hernando de Vega began building the current fortress at the beginning of the 16th century on the remains of an earlier castle from the 10th century .

The complex with a square floor plan - a side length of 73 meters - has four mighty corner towers that were equipped with cannons . The original moat around the castle has been filled with earth over the past centuries. The castle, which has been restored in recent years, now belongs to the municipality of Grajal de Campos.
