The Castillo de Santa Bárbara (official name: Castillo de Santa Bárbara y San Hermenegildo ) is located on the Canary Island of Lanzarote in the municipality and near the town of the same name Teguise .

history

The Castillo is a fortress east of Teguise and 135 meters above the city on the Guanapay volcano . It resembles a knight's castle, has a drawbridge and small round towers.

At the beginning of the 14th century, the small fort Guanapay was built by Lancelotto Malocello on the Guanapay volcano . In the 16th century, Sancho de Herrera built a fortress on the remains of the old fort to protect the city's population from pirate attacks. However, the siege by the pirate Morato Arraez in 1586 caused great damage. The Spanish Crown commissioned Leonardo Torriani with its reconstruction. The fortress kept its structure from 1596. The expansion carried out in the 17th century according to the Torrianis project strengthened the structure of the fortress. The remains of a cistern from the 18th century can still be seen in the volcano's caldera . The strategically well chosen location should continue to warn and protect the residents of Teguise from pirate attacks. So you can see to the west and east coast of Lanzarote, to the current island capital Arrecife , to the Timanfaya National Park in the south and to the island of La Graciosa in the north. Despite this, the fortress fell into the hands of pirates several times and was destroyed.

After two years of renovation, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara has housed an emigrant museum ( Museo del Emigrante Canario ) since 1991 , which was set up according to documents from the municipal archives and former emigrants . Photos, engravings, graphic representations, original maps, letters and belongings of the emigrants, as well as replicas of the emigrant ships of the 250 families who emigrated to Cuba , Venezuela , Florida and Argentina around 1880 due to a drought, can be viewed in the rooms .

In 2010 a pirate museum was added to the Castillo.
