Castle Saunderson

Castle Saunderson ( Irish Caisleán Shandarsan ) is a country house near Belturbet in County Cavan, Ireland . The Castle Saunderson International Scout Center opened in 2012 on the previous home of the Saunderson family , with accommodation and campsites for scouts and others.

history

Family seat

The Saunderson family acquired the original castle during the plantation period . The 14th century castle was called Breffni Castle and belonged to the O'Reillys of Breffni . The current country house dates from the 1840s. A well-known family member who was born there was Edward James Saunderson , a co-founder of the Ulster Unionist Party .

Captain Alexander Saunderson sold the country house in 1977 to a businessman who also wanted to use it as a family residence, but never succeeded. Castle Saunderson later served as a hotel, but was then damaged by fire, the third to occur in this country house.

International Scout Center

In 1997 the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland bought Castle Saunderson. The subsequent formation of Scouting Ireland and financial difficulties delayed the renovation of the country house and called the construction of the campsites into question. With the support of the American Ireland Fund and Cavan County Administration, the project made substantial progress and in November 2008 the EU committed a subsidy of over € 3 million.

Michael D. Higgins , President of the Irish Republic, opened the EU-funded Castle Saunderson International Scout Center on August 18, 2012. Dignitaries from Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic accompanied the President, e. B. Northern Ireland Ministers Jonathan Bell , Nelson McCausland and Jennifer McCann ; and the Minister of State of the Republic of Ireland, Fergus O'Dowd .

In February 2015, Minister Heather Humphreys confirmed the proposed restoration of a canal connecting the site to the Erne Basin by Waterways Ireland . The canal is part of the Ulster Canal .

Description and operation

Castle Saunderson's estate, which is approximately 41 hectares today, has driveways from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. There is a church and a cemetery belonging to the original owner family on the site.

The Scout Center participates in the Boy Scouts' Messengers of Peace program.

The first camp site manager at Castle Saunderson was Boy Scout Tony Smith of County Fermanagh .
