Belturbet ( Irish : Béal Tairbirt ) is a town in County Cavan in the north of the Republic of Ireland .

history

Belturbet is north of Cavan County , two miles south of the Northern Irish border with County Fermanagh , in one of the most convenient places to cross the River Erne . When the Anglo-Normans tried to conquer Cavan in the early 13th century, a Walter de Lacy built a small fortress on the local Turbet Island in 1211 .

In the 17th century the place was further developed and became an important trading center; there was also an English garrison . The city has been able to preserve much of its original historical state to this day, with the most important buildings in the area grouped around the central square or Diamond .

Demographics and location

During Census 2006 1411 people lived in Belturbet. The place is on the N3 from Dublin via Navan and Cavan Town on to Enniskillen in Northern Ireland and Ballyshannon in County Donegal . Nearby Cavan to the south and Enniskillen to the north are the closest major towns. The Upper Lough Erne is located directly across the border to County Fermanagh north of Belturbet. To the rail transport in Ireland Belturbet is disconnected since 1959; however, the old train station has been restored and has become one of the local tourist attractions.

The city's main source of income is tourism, including its own festival in the last week of July. Apart from jobs in the tourism industry, the majority of the residents work in the surrounding towns.

During the Troubles in Belturbet in 1972, two youths were killed in a car bomb attack.
