The Pare Mountains are a mountain range in northeastern Tanzania , northwest of the Usambara Mountains . The mountain range is part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains . There is a northern and a southern mountain range, which with the Shengena reaches an altitude of 2463 m. The Pare people live in this area. In addition to traditionally managed forests and forest protection areas, agricultural use dominates. In both parts of the mountains there are projects to promote soft tourism .
In the southern part, the South Pare Mountains, there are 49 localities (main town: Same ) and 11 forest protection areas (including Chome Forest Reserve with the highest point Shengena), 5 more protection areas are planned. The South Pare Mountains are separated from the Western Usambara Mountains by the Mkomazi river valley , a 20 km wide arid corridor. The endemic bird species South Pare white-eye ( Zosterops winifredae) only lives in the mountain forests of the South Pare Mountains , other animal species only live in the Eastern Arc Mountains.
The North Pare Mountains represent the northernmost foothills of the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania, they are 35 km southeast of the (geologically much younger) Mount Kilimanjaro . Its central plateau has been settled for a long time, the population is spread over 40 villages (main town Usangi ). The original forests have been replaced here by farmland or foreign trees. The remaining forests are largely isolated from one another, and they contain seven forest protection areas. Three species of vertebrates live in this part of the mountain , which can only be found in the Eastern Arc Mountains.
