Castlebawn (Ireland)
Castlebawn

Castlebawn ( Irish An Caisleán Bán , dt "the white castle") is the ruin of a tower house from the 16th century in County Clare, Ireland . It is located on the small river island Caher Iceland in Scariff Bay of Lough Derg in the course of Shannon . The McNamaras had the castle built around 1540. It was blown up in 1827, but today it has been restored and is open to the public.

history

Castlebawn had the chiefs of the McNamaras built in the mid-16th century. Records show that the Tower House was built for Owen McNamara but do not indicate the year of construction. The castle was first mentioned in 1570 when Sean McNamara , the boss of the eastern Clann-Cuilein died and Castlebawn left his son, Sir John McNamara . The McNamaras lived there until Oliver Cromwell's landings in the 17th century, when Castlebawn remained uninhabited.

In 1827, the Tower House was badly damaged when the administration tried to demolish it by blowing it up because it was used as a booth by local potcheen makers . But the castle was so well built that three of the enclosing walls remained intact.

Simon Flannery lived in the castle at the beginning of the 20th century and so it is still called "Simon's Castle" by the residents of the area.

restoration

In 1996 Pat and Mary Cody finished restoring the ruin, which is open to the public this summer. However, it can only be reached by boat.
