Castle More Moat ( Irish Ráth to Chaisleáin Mhóir ) is an Outbound moth in Irish County Carlow and is considered a national monument .
location
Castlemore Moat is about 2 km northwest of Tullow and 2 km west of the Slaney River . About 1 km south of this is the 19th century country house Castlemore House .
History and archeology
Raymond FitzGerald , one of the commanders of the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland , had the moth put on in the 12th century. The Forth O'Nolan area was assigned to him and he married Basilia , Strongbow's sister . The couple lived together on Castlemore Moat.
Today only an artificial mound of the motte remains, which is about 9 meters high. On it stands a 170 cm × 45 cm × 30 cm menhir with an incised Latin cross with a suppedaneum . The mound is not exactly circular, but measures 18 meters in an east-west direction and 13 meters in a north-south direction.
