Catedral de la Plata (1884 to 1999), also called Catedral de las pampas , is a neo-Gothic cathedral, episcopal church of the Archdiocese of La Plata and landmark of the city of La Plata , capital of the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina.

history

In 1881, as part of an architecture competition for the planning of various public buildings in the newly founded city, 70,000 pesos were tendered, but the plans for the cathedral were discarded despite active international participation in the competition.

Instead, the head of the provincial building department (Obras Públicas), Ing.Pedro Benoit, was entrusted with the project planning, who took over the planning together with the German architect Ernst Meyer and the French architect Emile Coutaret. The foundation stone was laid in 1884 by the godparents Dardo Rocha and his wife Juana Arana de Rocha, and in 1885 the project was officially approved. It was designed as a neo-Gothic cathedral in the French style and originally had three towers.

Construction began in 1898, the rose window was installed in 1928, in 1932 the cathedral was officially inaugurated for the 50th anniversary of the city of La Plata and on November 19, 1932 the first service took place before construction was completed. Until 1940 u. a. the stained glass for the transept was supplied by the Munich company Franz Xaver Zettler and the choir stalls, the seat of honor for the archbishop and the confessionals were set up.

In 1941 the floor was made of pink granite from Olavarría , gray granite from San Luis and black granite from Balcarce . In 1947, the cathedral was largely completed after the French company Lorin & Maunejean installed the windows.

On February 19, 1999, the two 111.70 m high towers were inaugurated and the carillon rang out, thus ending the more than hundred-year-old building history.

The rosette consists of around 25,000 pieces of glass and represents the Heavenly Jerusalem on 180 m².

Participating artists

  • Leo Moroder (born April 15, 1899 in Ortisei in Val Gardena1982 in Buenos Aires ). Most of the wood carvings come from him, e. B. the figure of Christ (Cristo Crucificado), the statue of Mary (Inmaculada Concepción) from 1967 and San Juan Bautista de Rossi. Moroder had learned his trade from his uncle Alois Anton Insam-Tavella and worked for a few years after the First World War with his uncle Franz Moroder, but emigrated to Argentina in 1924 with his compatriot Leo Mahlknecht. In the Sala Moroder of the Cathedral Museum is a bust of Moroder, which was made in 1982 by Leo Moroder's daughter, Marta, on the occasion of his death.
  • Miguel Schenke, also from Ortisei (Ortisei), carved the seat of honor for the archbishop (trono arzobispal) according to Moroder's plans , and he also made the confessionals.
  • Leo, Vigil and August Mahlknecht are responsible for the choir stalls (1936), the decoration of which with heads comes from Moroder's hand.
  • Francesco De Poli from the northern Italian city of Vittorio Veneto contributed the 25-ton, 20-ton carillon that is housed at a height of 75 m in the tower dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
