Categoriae decem

Categoriae decem ( Ten Categories ), also called Paraphrasis Themistiana , is a Latin summaryof Aristotle's category writing . She will u. a. Dated to the 4th century and located in the circle of Themistius or in the Neo-Platonic context and u. a. Attributed to Vettius Agorius Praetextatus . Sometimes it is only dated to the 8th to 9th centuries, e.g. Attributed toB. Remigius von Auxerre . The work was traditionallyascribed to Augustine , but this is untenable, as the editors of the text edition of 1674 (reprinted by Migne) noted.

Around 370 Augustine describes the enthusiasm for the Aristotelian category writing in Latin schools, which, if one excludes the use of the Greek text for good reasons, can only refer to three Latin editions: the chapters in De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii by Martianus Capella , the (not handed down) translation by Marius Victorinus or the Categoriae Decem . Also Isidore of Seville (around 560-636) does not use the translation of Boethius, but fragments of Cassiodorus (which itself Boethius used), Martianus Capella and Categoriae decem .

The Categoriae decem were one of the most important sources for early medieval European logic lessons, especially in the 9th and 10th centuries. The work was glossed over by Heiricus von Auxerre (approx. 835 - approx. 887). As long as the genuine Aristotelian script was not available, the Categoriae decem were mostly taken for a complete Latin translation of the same. The Categoriae u. a. from Johannes Scotus Eriugena , Ratramnus from Corbie , Fridugisus from Tours and above all Alcuin , who is responsible for the wide use within the Franconian education system. In the 11th century the influence of the Categoriae decem diminished as the real Aristotelian script became accessible in Latin translation; more recent Latin translations are u. a. by Boethius (510), an anonymous translator of the 9th or 10th century, and finally Wilhelm von Moerbeke (1266).
