Gahmen (formerly also: Gamen) is a district or statistical district of Lünen (North Rhine-Westphalia) with approx. 3700 inhabitants. It belongs to the district 1277 Gahmen .

geography

Gahmen is located on the southern edge of the city. It borders on the Osterfeld district in the north, the Brambauer district in the west and the Lünen-Süd district in the east . In the south it forms the city limit to the Dortmund district of Derne . The limits of Gahmens have been regulated several times in the past; Hof Schulz-Gahmen is now in the statistical district of Osterfeld and no longer - as it has been for centuries - in the growing district of Gahmen.

history

Schulz-Gahmen Farm

Gahmen was mentioned as Schultz zu Gahmen in the High Middle Ages . It had been part of the Derne office since 1905 and was incorporated into Lünen on October 1, 1923 at the instigation of the farmer and politician Paul Schulz-Gahmen . At that time Gahmen had 1612 inhabitants.

In 1987 the district of Gahmen had a total of 3490 inhabitants. In 2006 there were 3873.

Economy and Infrastructure

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Gahmen was reserved for agriculture. Local agriculture was mainly carried out by the Schulzenhof (today: Hof Schulz-Gahmen), which was later expanded to include a grain distillery. The estate is still owned by the family. In the course of industrialization, Shaft 2 ("Prussia I / 2" - "Prince Heinrich") was sunk by the Prussia colliery in 1873 , which began operations in 1902. In 1926, during the coal crisis, it was shut down and covered. Despite the closure, in the following years after 1962 the Gneisenau colliery pushed the coal mining under Gahmen. In the 20th century, this led to a lowering of the surface and the groundwater level as well as to considerable mining damage, which tore a valley into the landscape as the Gahmener Loch . In 1985 Gneisenau also stopped funding. Today there is an industrial area on the former colliery site in Gahmen. The settlement of Karlstrasse in Gahmen-Nord, which was also built on the farmland by Carl Schulz-Gahmen in 1900, is a reminder of mining history. In the northwest of the district, on Buchenberg , there has been a copper smelter of Aurubis AG (formerly Hüttenwerke Kayser AG ) since 1916 .

In the north of Gahmens is the Datteln-Hamm Canal , which separates the district development. The so-called Shell Harbor is located on it . Until the four-lane route of the B 236 was built , Gahmen had its own junction that led to the A 2 . However, this was demolished at the end of 1983 when the Dortmund-Nordost cross was built.

The Overbergschule elementary school (formerly Vinckeschule) is also located in Gahmen.
