Catfishing

Catfishing is a deception activity in which a person creates a sock puppet or a fake identity on a social network and usually selects a specific victim in a targeted manner. Catfishing is often used fraudulently on dating websites . The practice can be used for financial gain, compromising a victim, or simply as trolling or wish fulfillment.

The term "catfishing" has its roots in an American parable , in the catfish ( English catfish are used) to live cod to maintain during transport in motion. As a term for love affairs with fake accounts, it is first used in the documentary Catfish by filmmaker Nev Schulman from 2010 and the reality show Catfish based on it .

Legal evaluation

The question of the criminal liability of fake profiles and catfishing cannot be answered across all cases, it always depends on the individual case assessment.
