Cathedral in Sligo

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception ( Irish Ardeaglais Mhuire gan Smál ) is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic diocese of Elphin . It is located on Temple Street in Sligo , Ireland .

The construction of this church was initiated by the then Bishop Laurence Gillooly, who had been Bishop of Elphin since 1858. He decided that at that time the diocese was of such size and strength that the old church of St. John's Parish Chapel needed to be replaced.

He hired George Goldie, one of the most famous English architects for Catholic buildings of the 19th century. The cathedral was inaugurated on July 26, 1874 by Cardinal Paul Cullen , Archbishop of Dublin, with adoration and praise.

The church was built in the  Anglo-Norman style . It is the only cathedral in Ireland of this style. It offers space for 1400 people. A mighty church tower rises above the apse .
