The Catlins River is a river in the countryside The Catlins in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . It rises about 40 km southwest of Balclutha in an uninhabited area north of the Catlins Forest Park .

The river passes the place Tawanui at its middle course . About 10 km to the east, the river forms the Catlins Lake , where the towns of Hinahina and Ratanui lie. After the river at the end of the lake has passed a bridge between the largest town of the Catlins, Owaka and the south side of the lake, it takes its only major tributary west of Pounawea , the Owaka River . It passes the resort of New Haven north of the estuary and then flows into the Pacific .
