Pounawea is a small village in the Clutha District of the Otago region on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The name of the village comes from the Māori language and means something like "place where the water gathers".

geography

The village is located about 16 miles south of Balclutha and about 3.5 km southeast of Owaka , at the confluence of the Owaka River with the Catlins River and near the confluence of the Catlins River with the Pacific Ocean . Pounawea is accessible by a road from Owaka . Around 1.5 km to the east is the small holiday complex New Haven .

history

Pounawea was a busy little port town between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, which in 1899 got its own post office.

Events

On New Year's Day in 1874, the immigrant ship Surat ran aground in Catlins Bay and sank. All passengers and crew could be saved.

tourism

In addition to a small resident population, the village has numerous holiday homes ( cribs ), from which leisure activities such as picnicking, fishing, kayaking, bird watching and hiking are possible. Boating, sailing and water skiing are also possible.

Near the village is a protected forest with trees such as, Kahikatea , Kamahi , Rimu , Totara and South Island ironwood .

Computer game Sims 3

Pounawea was used as a location in the Sims 3 computer game in 2012 .
