Catocala coccinata is a butterfly found in North America( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

The moths reach a wingspan of 57 to 70 millimeters. The basic color of the upper side of the forewings shows various gray to brownish tones. The broad black-brown root welt is noticeable. Blemishes are indistinct. On the other hand, the black outer transverse line stands out clearly, showing a very pronounced W-sign, which is often filled with dark brown. The upper side of the hind wing is bright red and shows a wide black band as well as a black, slightly wavy central band. The fringes are white.
Similar species
With a wingspan of 75 to 95 millimeters, the moths of Catocala amatrix differ primarily in size.
distribution and habitat
Catocala coccinata occurs widely to locally in the eastern and some central regions of North America. In Florida it is represented by the subspecies Catocala coccinata sinuosa , in which the black central band on the upper side of the hind wing is very thin. The species inhabits oak forests.
Way of life
The nocturnal, univoltine moths can be found between May and September, mainly in July. You visit artificial light sources and baits . During the day they like to rest on tree trunks with their wings folded over their abdomen. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various oak species ( Quercus ), including: two-tone oak ( Quercus bicolor ), scarlet oak ( Quercus coccinea ), bush oak ( Quercus ilicifolia ), large-fruited oak ( Quercus macrocarpa ), red oak ( Quercus rubra) ) and Quercus stellata .
