Catocala neonympha is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 58 to 64 millimeters. The upper side of the forewing shows different shades of brown. The outer transverse line is black-brown, strongly jagged and shows a narrow loop reaching into the disk region . The inner transverse line is wavy. Blemishes only stand out indistinctly. The upper side of the hind wing has a yellow to yellow-orange color, a black-brown outer and a narrow, slightly curved central band of the same color. There is a black-brown spot at the apex . The thorax is light brown, the abdomen yellowish.
Similar species
The Catocala puerpera , which is similar in drawing, differs primarily in the reddish colored upper side of the hind wing and the brownish abdomen.
Distribution, subspecies and habitat
Catocala neonympha is found in the southeast of the European part of Russia and in Kazakhstan . The subspecies Catocala neonympha osthelderensis Hacker , native to 1990, is native to eastern Turkey , while the subspecies Catocala neonympha variegata ( Warren , 1913) is found in southern Central Asia . The species primarily inhabits steppe-like biotopes at the foot of mountainous areas.
Way of life
The moths are mainly to be found between June and August, in the Urals also in September, where they were sometimes seen flying during the day on warm days. At night they visit artificial light sources . Real licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) is given as the food plant of the caterpillars .
