Caulophryne jordani is a deep-sea frogfish belonging to the fan- finfamily(Caulophrynidae). George Brown Goode and Tarleton Hoffman Bean first described the species in 1896. It occurs worldwide in the bathypelagial and mesopelagial at depths of 100 to 1500 meters.

features

Caulophryne jordani has a rounded body and fan-shaped dorsal and anal fins. The dorsal fin is supported by 16, the anal fin by 17 fin rays. The first dorsal fin ray is transformed into a "fishing rod" ( Illicium ) with attached "bait" ( Esca ) to catch prey . The fish are black or black-brown. The Illicium is pigmented, with the exception of the area in the immediate vicinity of the Esca. The esca consists of 5 to 14 branched, transparent filaments.

The females of the species are up to 20 cm long, while the males are relatively small and only about 1.6 cm long. As with many other deep-sea frogfish, they live as parasitic dwarf males attached to the females.
