Causse de Sévérac

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Causse de Sévérac is a limestone plateau in the south-central region of the French Massif Central . It is part of the large limestone plateau Grand Causses and the regional nature park of the Grands Causses . It owes its name to the commune of Sévérac-le-Château ( Aveyron department ), which is located at the southern end of the Causse.

The plateau lies at an altitude of 700 to 1,250 m. The surface is characterized by grazing by sheep, which has been practiced for centuries. The capital of this region, Sévérac-le-Château, has been a fortress since ancient times. Archeology and toponymy show that menhirs are rare on this plateau, but there are Hallstatt barrows to be discovered, often near dolmens from the Copper Age , such as in the Bourrines region on the Causse de Sévérac.
