Ivan Nagler (born January 30, 1999 in Bruneck ) is an Italian luge athlete .

Juniors

Nagler initially competed in a single-seater. He contested his first international races in the Youth World Cup of the 2014/15 season and was 18th in Oberhof , eleventh in Igls and eighth in Winterberg . He finished 18th in the overall ranking of the racing series. The 2015/16 season began with his first podium finish in Lillehammer , where he finished third behind Paul Lukas Heider and Bastian Schulte and ahead of his compatriots Lukas Gufler and Fabian Malleier . After ninth place in Sigulda and 12th at Königssee , he was only beaten by Heider in Igls. He finished the season with eighth place in Altenberg and four in Oberhof. A first career highlight was the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, where Nagler came in seventh.

For the 2016/17 season, Nagler moved up to the junior division and also formed a toboggan double with Fabian Malleier in which he competed in addition to the individual races. Nagler is the pilot, Malleier is the man behind ("backpack"). The season opener took place in Calgary , where the duo Nagler / Malleier reached the podium in their first race and only had to admit defeat to the Russian doubles Vsevolod Kaschkin and Konstantin Korschunow . After he finished seventh in the individual race, Nagler / Malleier won the relay race with the Argentinian Verónica María Ravenna and Leon Felderer . After that, all three races took place again at the same place, the two Italians won the double race, in the individual and with the relay in the same composition as two days before he was fourth. From now on, the results in the two-seater were generally noticeably better. The races at the next station in the Junior World Cup in Oberhof were also the 2017 Junior European Championships . First, Nagler / Malleier won the bronze medal behind the German doubles Paul Gubitz and Hannes Orlamünder as well as Johannes Pfeiffer and Nico Semmler . In the single-seater he was 13th, with Hannah Niederkofler , Lukas Gufler and Fabian Malleier, Nagler won the silver medal behind the German relay. The 2017 Junior World Championships followed in Sigulda. After a 14th place in the individual, Nagler / Malleier retired shortly before the finish line after a driving error in the second run while on the medal course. With the Italian relay they came in 5th place. At the last two World Cup stations in Altenberg and Winterberg, Nagler / Mallerier came third in doubles, and in singles Nagler was eleventh and 12th. In addition, alongside Marion Oberhofer and Lukas Gufler , they came third in the relay in Winterberg. At the start of the 2017/18 season , Nager / Malleier were appointed to the expanded Italian World Cup squad for the first time. In Igls they started in the Nations Cup, but without being able to qualify as an additional starter for the World Cup race and finished tenth. They then made their debut in the World Cup in Altenberg and not only achieved a single-digit placement when they came sixth, but also qualified for the award ceremony. They were also used in the relay alongside Sandra Robatscher and Emanuel Rieder and came third behind the representatives from Germany and Austria. Then they were initially used again with the juniors. They won the next three double-seater races, two in a row in Oberhof and one at Königssee. In the individual, Nagler was 12th, fifth and again 12th. It was both the last races for the juniors and the last races in the single-seater. In the overall ranking of the Junior World Cup, Nagler / Malleier came sixth, Nagler alone 17th.

From now on Nagler / Malleier started the men in the performance area. They got the third starting place in Italy, which Florian Gruber and Simon Kainzwaldner had until then. After they won the Nations Cup race at Königssee, qualified for the World Cup with almost no effort and finished seventh there, they quickly became Italy's second doubles alongside Ludwig Rieder and Patrick Rastner for the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang . They prevailed against the long-standing world-class doubles Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber . The races in Oberhof didn't start quite as well, where they just qualified for the World Cup race with 14th place in the Nations Cup, in which they finished tenth and qualified again for the Italian World Cup relay. Together with Sandra Robatscher and Dominik Fischnaller , Nagler / Malleier finished sixth. After a second place behind the Latvians Oskars Gudramovičs and Pēteris Kalniņš in the Nations Cup race in Lillehammer, they finished seventh in the World Cup race and qualified for the first time for a sprint race, in which they finished sixth. The races in Sigulda , which were also the European championships in 2018, were a little weaker . Nagler / Malleier finished ninth in both ratings and qualified again for the World Cup sprint race, where they finished 14th. In the overall World Cup ranking, they finished 17th with 295 points, although they had only contested seven of the 13 races of the season.

For the Junior World Championships 2018 in Altenberg, Nagler / Malleier were nominated one last time for the juniors. At the races in Saxony they were considered the top favorites. They lived up to this role when they won the junior world champions of the previous year and the following year, Hannes Orlamünder and Paul Gubitz, as well as the Russian double Kaschkin / Korschunow. With Leon Felderer and Verena Hofer they also won the bronze medal with the relay behind Germany and Russia. At the end of the season, the Olympic Winter Games in South Korea became the highlight of his career so far. After the first run they were in eighth place, but with the seventh best running time in the second run they were able to move up one place and come in seventh. They were not only the best Italian doubles, but also only had to admit defeat to proven world-class doubles. With Andrea Vötter and Dominik Fischnaller, they also finished fifth in the relay race and, in comparison, drove the fifth-best time for the two-seaters in this competition.

The post-Olympic season 2018/19 began with a 17th place in Igls. After that, the double fell due to an injury to Nagler for several races; Malleier drove as a single-seater during this time. They only managed to return in Königssee, where they made it back to the top ten in tenth place. In addition, they were immediately the best Italian doubles again and started in the relay race, in which they took the comparatively weak eighth place. After that, they slowly improved from race to race. In Sigulda they were first third in the Nations Cup, then eighth in the World Cup race. There was a setback for the doubles at the 2019 World Championships in Winterberg, where they only finished 13th. In the separate U-23 classification, however, they were second behind the Russian double Kaschkin / Korschunow and thus won the silver medal. After they found their way back to the top of the world in Altenburg as second in the Nations Cup and fifth in the World Cup, a major setback followed in Oberhof with a disqualification. Nevertheless, they were nominated for the relay race. Here they won their first World Cup race alongside Andrea Vötter and Dominik Fischnaller. It was also the 2019 European Championships , with which Nagler and his teammates also became European champions. At the season finale in Sochi , Nagler / Malleier were tenth of the World Cup race after a fourth place in the Nations Cup and qualified for the final sprint race, which they did not finish after a fall. After only seven of 12 contested World Cup races, in which they were also disqualified once and crashed once, they finished 18th in the overall World Cup ranking with 193 points and sixth in the Nations Cup with 270 points from four of nine races.

In addition to a positive development, the 2019/20 season also repeatedly brought setbacks. The season started positively with a sixth place in Igls. In the following relay race, Nagler & Malleier won their second World Cup race together with Andrea Vötter Dominik Fischnaller. On the pre-Christmas overseas tour in North America, they finished eighth in the sprint in Lake Placid after finishing tenth in the World Cup. In Whistler they crashed in the main race and gave the first all-women doubles Caitlin Nash and Natalie Corless in the World Cup the opportunity to leave a men doubles behind. After the turn of the year they were weak 19th in Altenberg. Only in Lillehammer the results got better again. After finishing sixth in the Nations Cup, they narrowly missed their first podium in fourth place, but achieved their best individual result to date in a World Cup double race. With Dominik Fischnaller and Andrea Vötter, they also finished second behind the team from Austria. Since these races were also the 2020 European Championships , they also became vice European champions in the relay race and fourth in the doubles championship. In addition, they won the separate U-23 classification. Sigulda brought another setback with an 18th place, Oberhof with fifth place in the two-seater race and better results again with the relay. The 2020 World Championships in Sochi also produced mixed results. After 15th place in the sprint race, Nagler / Malleier were eighth in the double-seater race and placed in the separate U-23 classification behind their long-term rivals from Russia, Kaschkin / Korschunow. After finishing eleventh in Winterberg, they achieved their best result in a two-seater race in the World Cup with fourth place at the season finale at Königssee. With 382 points in 13th overall, they were third-best Italian doubles, but were only two points behind Ludwig Rieder and Patrick Rastner, who were one place better.
