Cavernas do Peruaçu , officially in Portuguese Parque Nacional Cavernas do Peruaçu , is the name of a national park in the north of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil . The park, which was formed on September 21, 1999, has an area of ​​568 km² and is located on the Rio Peruaçu (a tributary of the Rio São Francisco ) north of Januária , not far from the Grande Sertão Veredas National Park, about 600 km from Belo Horizonte . Parts are also in the municipalities of Itacarambi and São João das Missões .

Skeletons and traces of earlier residents are up to 11,000 years old. Impressive rock paintings can be found on hikes . In addition to the archaeological heritage (80 sites), nature (140 caves) and water resources are protected.

The vegetation consists of evergreen gallery forests in humid places and dry forest in Cerrado and Caatinga .

It can be reached via the MG-135 road, it is 45 km to the village of Fabião I with the seat of the environmental agency , from there another 2 km to the park. The former large estate Fazenda Retiro / Morro do Angú is not open to visitors, unless you have a special permit from the IBAMA environmental agency in Januária. In the meantime, the national park should also be opened to tourism.

The climate is tropical semi-arid with annual rainfall between 450 and 1400 mm. The rainy season is between October and April. The temperatures fluctuate between 16 and 34 ° C.

  • In one of the most spectacular places in the park, the Rio Peruaçu disappears into a deep canyon , forming the Gruta do Janelão ( cave of the large window ), 4 km long with dark sections and sudden views upwards. A 28 m long stalactite is said to be the largest in the world.
