Shallow water surrounds Cayo Largo in the north, recognizable by the bright blue color of the sea. In the south the ocean floor drops steeply, visible in the darker blue of the sea. You can see that sediments are deposited in the north of the island. |
Cayo Largo Del Sur, also simply Cayo Largo ( German "long island" ), is 25 km long and 3 km wide and is the second largest island in the Cuban Canarreos archipelago in the Caribbean Sea .
The largest island in the archipelago is Isla de la Juventud . Columbus is said to have visited the island on his second voyage in 1494 . It served pirates as a hiding place and base. The island consists of Ooid - limestone , which in a shallow lagoon was deposited. The coral reefs to the west are the main attraction for the dominant diving tourism industry . Furthermore, crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and wildlife to be observed attract tourists to Cayo Largo .
No locals live on Cayo Largo , as the workers in the hotels return to their families on the neighboring islands after about 20 days.
Cayo Largo has its own airport with an approx. 3 km long runway and a ferry connection to Isla de la Juventud and the Cuban mainland. The north of the island is covered with mangroves and salt marshes .
