Cazzo
Cazzo (pl .: Cazzi ) is avulgar expression for penis thatis widespreadin colloquial Italian and used in many derived forms; in German it is comparable to the expression dick .
The term, usually with an exclamation mark, is often used as an expression of surprise, strong emotion in a conversation. Comparable in German would be the word “ shit !” Or the English “ fuck !” (Which is also translated as “ cazzo! ” In Italian translations of English films ). Although this usage is considered vulgar, it is nonetheless widespread and used by all classes.
etymology
The origin of the term, which was already used during the Renaissance , is controversial. According to prevailing theories, it is either a contraction of the word capezzo (from Latin capitium ), in German "little boss", or derived from Latin cassus (ship's mast), alluding to the shape of the erect penis.
Derived terms
There are a myriad of derived terms, some of which are only used regionally. Many of these terms have less vulgar connotations and are used by many people in informal conversation (e.g., “ incazzarsi ”).
Examples:
- cazzata : a completely pointless, stupid action or emotion, dt. "nonsense"
- incazzarsi : “get (strongly) excited ”, combined with a certain loss of control
- Che cazzo vuoi? : coarser version of “ che cosa vuoi? "(What do you want?) - in German something like" what the hell do you want? "
- Che cazzo dici? : in German something like "what kind of shit do you tell?"
- cazzi tuoi / miei : my / your affairs - The statement “ sono cazzi tuoi ” could be translated as “this is your damned business”
- testa di cazzo : Synonym for "asshole", ie a person who deliberately behaves improperly.
- Che cazzo fai? : similar to the German "What shit are you doing?"
Use in literature and film
The literary work that is most closely correlated with the term cazzo is the sonnet Er padre de li santi by Gioacchino Belli from 1832, written in the Roman dialect. Here is a long list of various synonyms and paraphrases of the term.

Quotes
“ Vada a bordo, cazzo! “: Emotional invitation from Gregorio De Falco , the captain of the Livorno Coast Guard, to Francesco Schettino , captain of the wrecked Costa Concordia , to return to his ship to lead the rescue of the passengers and crew. The quote became so popular after the disaster that it was soon printed on T-shirts and applied to political issues.
