Gregorio de Falco (born March 8, 1965 in Naples ) is an Italian naval officer and politician. He is a member of the Senato della Repubblica .

He became known in January 2012 for his energetic interventions after the Costa Concordia accident .

biography

Career in the Navy

After graduating from the University of Milan with a law degree , he joined the Italian coastguard Guardia Costiera in 1994 and completed an officer training course at the Naval Academy ( Accademia Navale ) in Livorno .

From 1995 De Falco was employed at the port captains' offices of the coast guard in Mazara del Vallo , Genoa and Santa Margherita Ligure ; He headed the latter office from 2003 to 2005. He then served in a leading position in the operations management of the Livorno Port Captain's Office.

Costa Concordia accident

On January 13, 2012, the cruise ship Costa Concordia , owned by the Costa Crociere shipping company and under the command of Captain Francesco Schettino , collided with a rock in the waters off the island of Giglio , causing a 70-meter-long leak on the left outer shell was followed by a partial list of the ship.

De Falco took over the coordination of the rescue operation under difficult circumstances. Political career

De Falco stood as a candidate for the Five Star Movement in the 2018 general election in Italy and was elected to the Senate of the Republic .

He was a member of the left wing of the movement and was seen as very close to the President of the Chamber of Deputies Roberto Fico . On December 31, 2018, De Falco was banned from the movement after accused of violating the code of ethics on multiple occasions. In an interview, he stated that he was expelled for voting against the "security decree" and accused the Five Star Movement of lacking democracy and freedom of choice.
