Karratha is a center in the resource-rich northwest of Western Australia .

geography

Karratha is the center of the western part of the Pilbara region as well as the administrative seat and by far the largest place of the LGA City of Karratha . The place corresponds to the eponymous ward (constituency) of the City of Karratha, one of four wards . It borders the Dampier Ward in the northwest . He shares the rest of the land borders with the Roebourne / Pastoral Ward . The northern limit is the coast of Nickol Bay , a bay in the Indian Ocean .

Karratha is located 1,575 kilometers north of Perth , 690 kilometers south of Broome and 240 kilometers southwest of Port Hedland . The place can be reached via the North West Coastal Highway or by air.

After the surface Karratha is the smallest ward of the City of Karratha, with less than 200 square kilometers (the total of city: 15,234 square kilometers), but unites more than 70 percent of the population to be (11,490 of a total of 16,410 in 2006, or 16,490 of a total of 22,992 in January 2014).

economy

Karratha is an Australian resource extraction center. One of the world's largest raw material groups, the Rio Tinto Group , mines iron there with its subsidiary Pilbara Iron . In Karratha which begins gas pipeline of Woodside Petroleum Limited for liquefied natural gas , the natural gas from the area of the North West Shelf supports to Western Australia and the sea salt production by the company Dampier Salt is important.

Karratha grew into a large settlement in the 1960s due to expanding iron production. Karratha has the largest mall and numerous stores in the Pilbara area , attracting customers from nearby towns such as Dampier , Wickham and Roebourne .

After the city of Port Hedland, Karratha is the second largest city in the northwest of the Australian state of Western Australia.

Tourist information

The place has hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts and caravan sites, which are often overcrowded. There are restaurants, taverns and night clubs.

The Nickol Bay Hospital is located in Karratha .

Karratha Airport can be reached from Perth and has the second most take-offs and landings in Western Australia. The airport is served by three airlines: Qantas Airways , Skywest and Virgin Australia . Qantas flies twice a week on a Boeing 737-800 from Brisbane to Karratha.

On the Burrup Peninsula , 15 kilometers north is the Murujuga National Park . With over ten thousand illustrations, there is the world's densest collection of rock drawings (petroglyphs) .
