Coordinates: 20 ° 44 ′ S , 116 ° 50 ′ E The City of Karratha , formerly Shire of Roebourne , is a local government area (LGA) in the Pilbara region in the Australian state of Western Australia . The area is 15,236 km² and has about 22,900 inhabitants.
Karratha is located on the northwest coast of the state about 1,250 kilometers north of the capital Perth . The seat of the City Council is in the city of Karratha , where about 16,000 inhabitants live (2016).
Karratha City includes the Dampier Archipelago (to the Dampier Ward ) and the Montebello Islands (to the Roebourne / Pastoral Ward ).

The Karratha Council has eleven members. The councilors are elected by the residents of the four wards (six from the Karratha Ward, two each from the Wickham / Point Samson / Cossack and from the Dampier and one from the Roebourne / Pastoral Ward). The Council Chairman and Shire President are also recruited from among the Councilor.
