Location and facilities

Plant map

The Central Experimental Farm / Ferme experimentalale centrale is located about three kilometers southwest of the government district in the River / Rivière district and is completely surrounded by built-up areas. To the north of this farm are the districts of Civic Hospital ( Kitchissippi Ward ) and West-Centretown ( Somerset Ward ), to the east are Dows Lake and the Carleton University campus , to the south are Fisher Heights ( Knoxdale-Merivale Ward ) and Carleton Heights and to the west are Central Park and Carlington (both River Ward). The 427 hectare site is bounded by Carling Avenue in the north, the Rideau Canal in the east, Baseline Road in the south and Merivale or Fisher Avenue in the west. The area is intersected by Prince of Wales Drive and the National Capital Commission Scenic Driveway, as well as part of Fisher Avenue . A large part of the area is taken up by test fields. In addition, the “central experimental farm” includes an arboretum and an experimental garden with ornamental plants .

history

The "Central Experimental Farm" was established in 1886 as part of a series of state experimental farms. The primary goal was to improve agriculture and animal husbandry and to adapt them to the conditions in the Dominion .

A short time later, in 1889, the arboretum was laid out with initially 200 trees by the director William Saunders and the chief botanist James Fletcher .

From 1905 the Dominion Observatory was completed and opened on April 17th of the same year. As the national observatory, it was responsible for determining the official time in Canada.

Since 1988 the volunteer organization Friends of the Farm has been supporting the maintenance of the facilities as a cultural monument and local recreation destination .

An advisory board was formed in 1999 to ensure public participation in the management of the farm.

Today the farm is operated by the Canadian Department of Agriculture , which is also headquartered here.

Some buildings no longer used for agriculture have been converted into the Museum of Agriculture and Food .
