The church tower San Gottardo is the campanile of the church of the same name in the village of Intragna in the municipality of Centovalli in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .
situation
At 65 meters, the San Gottardo is the highest church tower in the canton of Ticino.
Erected from hand-cut natural stone in the years 1765–1772, the tower has the following dimensions:
Side lengths at the base: 8 × 6.8 meters, thickness of the walls: 1.8 meters at the base, 1.25 meters in the upper area.
Inside, 165 stone steps with a width of 80 cm lead up to the belfry at a height of approx. 38 meters.
The ringing - in C sharp major - sounds from six bells; the second bell, facing east, is famous for an incident in 1802, when the inhabitants of Intragna took possession of it "by force of arms". Although the bell had been duly purchased and paid for, the citizens of Locarno refused to hand it over. The bell was cast in 1845, as the inscription testifies.
