Centronycteris is a bat genus in the smooth-nosed cantilever family with two species that occur in Central and South America .

The following species belong to the genus.

features

The species resemble the sack-winged bats ( Saccopteryx ) in external appearance, but they lack the pockets on the flight skins . Furthermore, both genera differ in the skull structure. These bats reach a head-trunk length of 50 to 62 mm, a forearm length of 43 to 48 mm and a tail length of 18 to 23 mm. The long and woolly fur is predominantly earth-colored to yellow-brown. Reddish shades can appear in front of the eyes and on the tail skin.

The few individuals whose weight was measured weighed between 4 and 9 g, with females being slightly heavier than males.

Way of life

Because of the rarity of these animals, very little is known about their way of life. Most of the specimens were caught in dense tropical lowland forests. The southern species could also be registered in mountains up to 1450 meters high. Tree hollows or, rarely, the underside of large leaves serve as resting places. The species fly slowly between the trees or in forest aisles and hunt various insects. Females found were pregnant with one young.
