Ceolfride

Ceolfrid (* 630 or 642 ; † September 29, 716 in Langres , Burgundy ) was a saint. He was an abbot at Wearmouth and Jarrow . His name day is September 29th .

At the age of 18, Ceolfrid was ordained a Benedictine monk in the Ripon Monastery and after ten years of study by Wilfrid of York . Benedict Biscop appointed him prior in Wearmouth Monastery , and later abbot of Jarrow Monastery . After Benedict's death in 690, Ceolfrid continued his duties as a missionary . He increased the libraries of his monasteries - a valuable, preserved copy of the Vulgate goes back to him and was brought to Rome by him ( Codex Amiatinus ). In old age he resigned his office and traveled once more to Rome, but died on the way.

Ceolfrid was buried in Langres , his relics came to Jarrow and, during the Danish occupation, to Glastonbury .
