Ceratogymna is a genus of hornbills (Bucerotidae), whose representativesare native towestern sub-Saharan Africa . A German name is not established. However, they are sometimes referred to as French hornbills .
Like all hornbills, the species belonging to the genus Ceratogymna are cave-breeders. The female spends several weeks in a tree cavity, the entrance to which is walled up except for a narrow crack. The male feeds them through this narrow gap and later also the young birds.
Two species are assigned to the genus. The Black Helmet Hornbill is classified as safe (least concern) by the IUCN . The golden helmets hornbill, on the other hand, is considered endangered.

Ceratogymna are hornbills with a body length of 60 to 70 centimeters. The body plumage is predominantly black. Both species have very large bare spots on the face, wattles and large inflatable bare throat patches. There is a pronounced sexual dimorphism: the females of both species have red-brown head and neck plumage. In contrast, the head and neck of the males are black.
Distribution area
Both species are native to western sub-Saharan Africa . The black-helmeted hornbill occurs in Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Account, Zaire, Central African Republic, south, Uganda and Angola. The Black Helmet Hornbill is also the only hornbill found on the island of Bioko .
The distribution area of the Golden Helmet hornbill partially overlaps with that of the Black Helmet hornbill. It occurs in Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bisseau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon. The distribution is not contiguous in this large area.
