The Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc (Artists ' Circle of Saint Luke) is an artists' association founded in Barcelona in 1893 by Joan and Josep Llimona , the mayor Alexandre M. Pons and a group of artists who were close to the teachings of Bishop Josep Torras i Bages . This artists' association was created as a reaction to the anti-clerical humor of Catalan Modernism and against the activities of the Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona , which is often only referred to by its founding name, Cercle Artístic de Barcelona , which are perceived as frivolous .

positioning

The association represented a rigid Catholic moralism in art. Artistically, he stood up for the virtues of the family. He initially banned all nude and nude pictures from his exhibitions. The club had its heyday under its president, the writer Lluís Serrahima . Members of the association included Dionís Baixeras , Iu Pascual , Antoni Gaudí , Joaquim Vancells , Joaquim Renart , Ramon Sunyer . There were also artists who were less religious or not affiliated at all, such as Joaquim Torres-Garcia , Josep Pijoan , Feliu Elias , Darius Vilàs , and Francesc d' Arc . Galí and Eugeni d'Ors simply join this association for drawing. One can go so far in the statement that a root of the Noucentisme reaches back to this association. In its prime, the association supported other groups such as the Amics de l'Art Litúrgic (Friends of the Liturgical Art) and the Agrupació Couvert . After the Spanish Civil War , the association reorganized and supported the activity of associations such as the Agrupació Dramàtica de Barcelona (Association of Dramatic Arts of Barcelona) and the Coral Sant Jordi (Sant Jordi Choir). In 2009 the company moved into the new headquarters in the Palau Mercader de Barcelona , a building from the 16th century that was completely refurbished for this purpose.

Prices

The association created the Joan Miró Drawing Prize . In 1993 the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc received the ACCA award and the highest cultural award of the Catalan government, the Creu de Sant Jordi , the George's Cross. In 2013 the association received the gold medal of the city of Barcelona for extraordinary cultural merits.
