Joaquim Renart

Joaquim Renart i Garcia (born July 17, 1879 in Barcelona , Kingdom of Spain ; † September 4, 1961 ibid) was a Spanish draftsman , painter and interior designer of Catalan descent.

Life

Renart was the son of the painter Dionís Renart i Bosch in whose studio he began his professional life. He was also the brother of the sculptor Dionís Renart .

Renart studied at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona . Among his teachers were Francesc Soler i Rovirosa , the painter Francesc Torrecassana i Sallarés and Ramón Martí Alsina . He also studied with Apel·les Mestres , who later became his great friend. In 1894 he entered the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc .

Renart specialized in multicolored paintings and decorations in gold, the restoration of altars and copied works of art and antiques. He was also known for his designs for bookplates , which were published in an illustrated book in Barcelona in 1907 and showed him as an important representative of Spanish Art Nouveau .

Renart became known to the public through the establishment of the Fomento de las Artes Decorativas in 1903. Since its re-establishment in 1951, he has been president of the Cercle Artistíc de Sant Lluc . He was also president of the Orfeó Català from 1941 to 1948 . He was also a member of the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi .

In 1965 a memorial exhibition on his work took place in Barcelona.

Diaries

In the years from 1918 until his death in 1961 he filled 87 diaries in which he also referred to cultural and political phenomena and his own experiences. The diaries are now in the Biblioteca de Catalunya along with sixty albums full of related illustrations by the artist. Between 1995 and 2003, six volumes of the diaries have been published so far.
