Life

Girona (1949)

Iu Pascual was born in Vilanova i la Geltrú in 1883. He came from a middle-class family and initially studied architecture. When he discovered his talent for drawing and painting, he enrolled in an art academy for drawing and painting lessons. Here he came into contact with the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc , one of the leading circles of the Catalan Noucentisme in Barcelona , where he exhibited his own pictures as early as 1902. In 1911 he was awarded at the Exposició de Belles Arts in Barcelona. After the death of Josep Berga i Boix , he took over the management of the Escola Menor d'Arts i Oficis in Olot after a public appointment process . As a painter as well as a teacher, he developed guidelines for traditional, bucolic landscape painting. In addition, he gave the school new impulses in nude painting, perspective drawing, artistic wood and metalworking and in architecture. From 1931 he formed this institution into a comprehensive school for fine arts and handicrafts. In 1934 Iu Pascual took over the management of L'Escola Superior de Paisatge, newly founded by the Catalan government (Generalitat) in Olot . He developed the curriculum as well as the entire organization of this art school. In March 1936, he organized an exhibition in the Casa de l'Ardiaca in Barcelona, in which he demonstrated the capabilities of the new Olotens School of Art. During the civil war, Iu Pascual did everything in his power to preserve the art school he supervised and the culture of art in Olot. Towards the end of the war, Iu Pascal was brought before a "Tribunal for Political Responsibility" and found guilty of running an art school established by the Catalan government. He was removed from his apprenticeship and placed under house arrest, so that he could no longer follow his life theme of landscape painting. The art college he supervised was closed. Iu Pascual went to Riudarenes, where he spent the last ten years of his life.

Iu Pascal represented a landscape painting in the sense of Noucentism (Catalan Art Nouveau). He painted landscapes with and without figures. One of his artistic specialties are nude drawings in the landscape. The landscape he preferred to depict was the landscape of the Garrotxa around Olot. Pascual made Olot an important place of the Catalan Noucentism. Pascual also composed a sardana . According to his statements, this dance fits perfectly into the landscape of the Garrotxa.
