Cereus saddianus is a species of plant in the genus Cereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Brazilian botanist Nagib Saddi, Jardim botânico da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (Cuiabá, Brasil)

description

Cereus saddianus grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of 2 to 6 meters. A conspicuous trunk is formed. The upright, cylindrical, gray-green shoots have a diameter of up to 6.5 centimeters. There are eight to nine wavy ribs that are up to 1.5 inches high. The areoles on it are 1.7 to 2 centimeters apart and wear white wool. The needle-like, pointed thorns are light yellow and have a darker base. The single central spine is 1.3 to 2.5 inches long. The five to seven downward radial spines are 5 to 12 millimeters long.

The white flowers are 7.5 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches in diameter. The ellipsoid fruits reach lengths of 4.5 to 5.5 centimeters with diameters of 2 to 4 centimeters. Their flesh is a little pink.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cereus saddianus is common in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso . The first description as Monvillea saddiana was published in 1985 by Carlos Toledo Rizzini and Armando de Mattos . Pierre Josef Braun placed them in the genus Cereus in 1988 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
