The cerrado field mouse ( Thalpomys cerradensis ) is a rodent in the burrowing family that is found in South America.

features

With a head-torso length of 90 to 109 mm, a tail length of 51 to 70 mm and a weight of 26 to 40 g, the Cerrado field mouse is a small rodent, but slightly larger than the other species of the genus Cerrado mice . It has hind feet 18 to 21 mm long and ears 14 to 17 mm long. The dense and bristly fur is predominantly light brown with yellow, pink or red tones that are more or less prominent. The darkest areas occur on the back, while the throat is rather light. Dark circles and the cheeks have shades of orange. The ears have short hair and the tail is thickly covered with hair. It has a darker top. The Cerrado field mouse has a short brush made of stiff hair on each finger and on each toe at the base of the claw . The female's three pairs of teats are distributed over the chest, abdomen and groin area.

distribution

The species lives in the Cerrado savannah landscape in central Brazil . In damp areas of the landscape there are occasional palm trees in addition to grass. Trees and bushes are also scattered in dry areas.

Way of life

The Cerrado field mouse is nocturnal from sunset to about three hours before sunrise. She is mainly on the floor. After fires, the species is one of the first rodents to re-colonize these areas. A population maximum occurs about two years later.

Danger

Changes in the landscape make parts of the range unsuitable for the Cerrado field mouse, which also leads to the separation of populations. However, the entire stock is not threatened. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern .
