Cethosia cydippe ( Red Lacewing ) is a tropical butterfly from the genus Cethosia fromthe noble butterfly family ( Nymphalidae ).
features
The wings of the moth have a wingspan of about eight centimeters. They are black on the outside and bright red towards the black body and brown on top. A white band runs in front of the wing tips of the forewings. The underside of the forewings resembles the top. The underside of the hind wings is brown, at the base orange-red with a pattern of elongated, white-edged black spots. In the post-disk region there is a band of dark spots with a light border.
The fully grown caterpillars are black with yellow horizontal stripes and black thorns.
distribution
Cethosia cydippe occurs in New Guinea , the Indonesian islands of Aru , Kei , the Moluccas and in Queensland ( Australia ) on the northern Gulf of Carpentaria and on the northeast coast.
According to the large distribution area there are numerous subspecies , of which in Australia the subspecies Cethosia cydippe ssp. chrysippe (synonym Cethosia chrysippe ) occurs.
Way of life
The caterpillars feed on Adenia heterophylla and species of the genus Hollrungia from the passion flower family (Passifloraceae).
