The Château Haut-Marbuzet is a winery in the Bordeaux wine region . It is located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe , which is one of the four local appellations of the Médoc . The first wine Château Haut-Marbuzet has been classified as Cru Bourgeois since 1932 and as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in the 2003 classification. According to Ecker, Château Haut-Marbuzet offers a favorable price-enjoyment ratio and is equivalent to a second or at least a third Grand Cru Classé in terms of quality .

history

The origin of the Château Haut-Marbuzet dates back to 1848 when the MacCarthy winery was divided. The winery achieved a certain fame from 1952 when Château Haut-Marbuzet came into the possession of the Duboscq family. At that time, Hervé Duboscq bought 7 hectares of fallow vineyards. As an autodidact in viticulture, he tilled the vineyards and sold part of his wine production through direct marketing. His son Henri Duboscq worked in the winery since 1962 and together they developed their personal style of wine-growing: u. a. 100% new oak barrels and only the naturally available yeasts are used for the expansion.

Vines and wine

The vineyards of currently approx. 65 ha are located in the southern area of Saint Estèphe between Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose , both classified as Grand Cru Classé . The Château Haut-Marbuzet and its vineyards are located on a gravel terrace that rises not far from the left bank of the Gironde. The share of the grape varieties is divided into approx. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon , 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc . The high proportion of Merlot is typical for the wines of Château Haut-Marbuzet and it is unusually high for wines from Saint-Estèphe.

Henri Duboscq says he rejects chemical weed killing. The harvest is awaited until fully ripe or even slightly over-ripe. The individual plots and grape varieties are vinified separately without the addition of pure yeast and then selected for the first wine Château Haut-Marbuzet.

The wines of the recent history of Château Haut-Marbuzet have always been recommended in the well-known French wine guide Hachette: 1 star each (out of a maximum of 3) for the 2005 and 2006 vintages; There were 2 stars for the years 2007 and 2008.

In a note on the primeur tasting of the 2005 vintage in April 2006, Ecker wrote about Château Haut-Marbuzet u. a .: "Fine, almost closed, recognizable complex bouquet (cherries, cassis; also subtle honey-sweet flowers, roses, chocolate); (...); freshness with a long finish and finesse, potential."
