Chöpfi
The Chöpfi is a sandstone - shed on the outskirts of Winterthur . It lies below the highest point on the southern slope of the Wolfensberg above Wülflingen . The Chöpfi is a popular destination.
Emergence
The molasse sandstone exposed in the Chöpfi consists of tertiary deposits of the upper freshwater molasses that were formed around 15 million years ago . The knuckle formations can be explained by deposits of lime or cold clay , which made parts of the sandstone harder and more weather-resistant. While the surrounding pure sandstone was eroded away over time , the remaining harder rock formed the characteristic "heads" (Knauer), which gave the place its name.
Nature reserve
The Chöpfi-Wolfensberg area is a nature reserve of cantonal importance. Dry stone walls and piles of branches provide a habitat for small animals. Wild bees find shelter in a bee hotel .
