Chōko Iida ( Japanese 飯 田 蝶 子 ; born April 17, 1897 in Asakusa , Tokyo ; died December 26, 1972 ) was a Japanese film actress . She is known for her roles as an old woman from the people and as an older aunt, has appeared in a total of 325 films. She was married to the cameraman Hideo Shigehara ( 茂 原 英雄 ; 1905-1967).

Live and act

Iida Chōko was born in Asakusa, Tōkyō. After leaving high school without a degree, she worked at the Matsuzakaya department store. But she soon joined the Nakamura Matsugoro Film Company. In 1922 she moved to the Shōchiku film company, where her acting skills were perceived by a Shōchiku director.

She made her debut in 1923 in "Die dying Wife". Then she appeared in “The Wallet” ( が ま ぐ ち , Gamaguchi ; 1924) and in “Useless Opinion” ( 御 意見 御 無用 , Goiken muyō ) in collaboration with Jun Arai ( 新 井 淳 ; 1890-1943). After her wedding to Shigehara, she played the leading role in a number of films by Gosho Heinosuke ( 五 所 平 之 助 ; 1902–1981), including "The Tortoise" (お か め, Okame ; 1927), "The Bath in the Flowing World" ( 浮世 風 呂 , Ukiyo-buro ; 1929) and “Because I was born a woman” ( 女 と 生 ま れ た か ら に ゃ , Onna to umareta kara nya ; 1934).

Iida later starred with Takeshi Sakamoto ( 坂 本 武 ; 1899–1974) in "Eine Laune" ( Dekigokoro ), "Drift-grass story" ( Ukigusa Monogatari ), "A hostel in Tōkyō" and in other films in a successful series of the director Yasujirō Ozu .

Iida received the Japanese Medal of Honor in 1963 and the Order of the Sacred Treasure 4th class in 1967 . She died of lung cancer in 1972 at the age of 75.
