Chōsokabe Motochika ( Japanese 長 宗 我 部 元 親 ; * 1539 in Japan ; † July 11, 1599 in Japan) was a Japanese nobleman and was one of the Sengoku daimyō , influential feudal lords ( daimyō ) towards the end of the Sengoku period .

Chōsokabe Motochika took over the Ichijō family in 1574. He later gained control of the rest of Tosa through his victory at the Battle of Watarigawa in 1575. He also destroyed the Kono and the Soga clan . In the following year he spread his influence over all of Shikoku by 1583. However, in 1585 Toyotomi Hideyoshi , ( Oda Nobunaga's successor) invaded the island with 100,000 men, led by Ukita Hideie , Kobayakawa Takakage , Kikkawa Motonaga, Toyotomi Hidenaga , and Toyotomi Hidetsugu . Motochika capitulated, losing the provinces of Awa , Sanuki and Iyo . Hideyoshi granted him control of his home province of Tosa .

Under Hideyoshi's command, Motochika and his son Chōsokabe Nobuchika took part in the invasion of the neighboring island of Kyūshū , where Nobuchika died. In 1590 Motochika led the fleet used by Hideyoshi against the Hōjō at the siege of Odawara , after the unification of the country he also fought with Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the invasion of Korea in 1592.

After Motochika died in 1599 at the age of 61, his successor was Chōsokabe Morichika .
